Spark plugs play a big role in the proper function of the vehicle. This very small component of your car’s engine is responsible for the ‘spark’ that ignites the fuel, creating combustion in the engine. Without the spark of the plug, there is no combustion, resulting in a car that won’t start. Faulty spark plugs can also lead to other problems such as decreased fuel economy and increased emissions. Carworks of Longmont and its team of ASE certified mechanics will inspect your vehicle’s ignition system and perform tune ups to include replacing the spark plugs.
Signs of Faulty Spark Plugs:
- Poor Performance: If you notice your vehicle is having a hard time going when you accelerate, or it’s sluggish, this could indicate that your spark plugs are not functioning properly.
- Troubles Starting Car: If it’s difficult to start the car or it seems jerky when doing so, this could mean that your spark plugs aren’t working correctly.
- Poor Gas Mileage: Your vehicle’s fuel economy can decrease by up to 30% if your spark plugs aren’t performing properly. If you notice more trips to the pump, this could be a good indication that it’s time to replace those spark plugs.
- Rough or Noisy Idling: When the car is not moving, or idling, the engine should run with a smooth and steady sound. If the spark plugs are deteriorating, you may notice noises such as knocking or pinging. You may also notice a rough idle to include jerking when the car is not in motion.
It’s a good rule of thumb to have your spark plugs inspected around every 30,000 miles and replaced about every 100,000 miles, or per your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. If your vehicle is experiencing any of the symptoms associated with deteriorating spark plugs, it’s a good idea to have your ignition system inspected, to avoid any further costly repairs.
