Tips for Improving Gas Mileage

Summer is right around the corner, which means it’s that time of year for traveling. Chances are, the increase in travel will bring an increase in gas prices. Just because your wallet may take a hit at the pump doesn’t mean you can’t get the most out of your full tank of gas. Along with preventative maintenance, following these easy tips can really improve your vehicle’s gas mileage:

  • Use proper motor oil – If the weight of motor oil used is heavier than what is recommended for your vehicle, this can cause the engine to work harder due to increased friction, which will burn more fuel. Stick with your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.
  •  Reduce weight – Remove excess junk from your car or truck. Adding weight to your vehicle makes the engine work harder, thus, burning more fuel. Taking “a load off” can increase your fuel efficiency about a mile or two per gallon.
  • Keep your gas cap sealed – As with anything else, the rubber seal around your gas cap can deteriorate over time. Tears and cracks in the seal allow air into the tank, which causes the engine to consume more fuel. Inspect your gas cap on a regular basis.
  • Use cruise control – Not only is it safer for you to set the cruise control at the posted speed limit, it minimizes breaking and acceleration, which helps with fuel efficiency. It’s highly recommended to utilize cruise control if it’s an option.
  • Replace spark plugs and air filter – Changing out these components of your vehicle’s engine during routine auto maintenance can improve gas mileage by as much as 15% and keep your car running longer. Refer to your owner’s manual for recommended preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Check tire pressure – Most of us don’t think about this simple, yet important maintenance procedure, and it can be done before leaving the driveway. When tire pressure is low, the engine uses more fuel, therefore, keeping your tires at the recommended pressure will ultimately provide greater fuel efficiency.

As gas prices increase, it’s good to know there are steps that can be taken to maximize fuel efficiency. With proper routine and preventative maintenance, not only can you improve gas mileage, but lengthen the life of your vehicle.
